San Juan Bautista

It is one of the oldest churches in Malaga as it is one of the four churches founded by the Catholic Monarchs after the reconquest in 1487. It was built in the 15th century, although it underwent modifications until the 18th century. It is located in Calle San Juan, in the historic center of the city. It stands out for its interior beauty.
Its style, Gothic mixed with Mudejar in its primitive version, had a nave and a side nave. The tower was completed in 1543 and the church underwent extensions and modifications in the following years. This tower was destroyed by the earthquake of 1680, but was later rebuilt in the following years.
The baroque aspect of the church corresponds to the intervention of 1760. It suffered the attacks of May 1931, which left it devastated and where great losses were suffered. It was also damaged in a fire in 1980. But in recent years restoration work has been carried out.
It is home to two brotherhoods such as the Archconfraternity of the Sorrows of St. John and Royal Brotherhoods Fusionadas, of which the popular Malaga actor Antonio Banderas is a brother.
